What is Verdelho?

Verdelho is a white grape variety widely planted in Swan Valley, producing dry white wines with crisp acidity, citrus, and tropical stone fruit flavours.

Verdelho is a white wine grape that has become a mainstay in Swan Valley's viticulture since the 1980s. Native to Portugal and grown widely in Australia's warm wine regions, the variety thrives in the valley's Mediterranean climate, where the summer heat concentrates sugars and acidity in the fruit.

The wines made from Verdelho grapes are dry whites with a distinctive flavour profile. Expect crisp acidity balanced against stone fruit such as peach and nectarine, citrus notes like lemon and lime, and sometimes tropical characters of mango or pineapple. The acidity keeps the wines fresh and food-friendly, while the alcohol sits typically between 11 and 13 percent. When well-made, Verdelho avoids heaviness and delivers brightness even in Swan Valley's heat.

Winemakers value Verdelho for its reliability in the region and its ability to express terroir without the muzzling that overcropping brings. Many Swan Valley producers offer Verdelho as a core offering, whether as a single varietal or blended with other white grapes. For those visiting the valley, Verdelho is one of the working standards to taste at cellar-door tastings, reflecting both the region's character and the variety's place in its vineyard make-up.
